Mobile Phone Signal Strength in Montclair

Submitted by Chris Casey on Wed, 07/20/2005 - 2:54pm.

Cell Phone LogosI recently switched from Verizon Wireless to Cingluar in order to upgrade my phone and get a better deal adding another. But I've been VERY disapointed by the signal strength I get from Cingular in Montclair. Frequently I get no service at all, or very weak service. If I'm lucky I can make a call standing at the end of my driveway. And it's useless to hope the kids can call home from the beach. It seems like the whole community is a big Cingular dead zone.

I would be interested to hear from other Montclairions about which wireless provider they use, and what they have found the reliablility and signal strength to be within Montclair. Please, tell us, how many bars do YOU have!

Well I conducted a little survey at my work and found out some information on cingular in general. Out of the three people here who have cingular 3 are switching service. Two are going to Verizon while one is going to Nextel, he wants that instant talk feature. The reason is unanimous, signal strength is not satisfactory to nonexistent.

I have never had cingular as a provider. I've been with Verizon for 5 years now without complaint. I would switch, contract providing you can now. They always get you with that... don't they?

Thanks Chris and TJ for this site.

I was browsing the web today wondering where to find information on cell coverage in Montclair, saw a link for Montclair on Wikipedia, and then followed their link here!

We've had Verizon for two years, but our house (by the firestation at Cardinal/Waterway) is a veritable dead-zone for coverage. We can stand at the end of the drive-way and pick up a weak signal...period. Visiting family members with Cingular have the luxury of using either the end of the drive-way or a tiny NW corner of our back deck...period.

I was hoping someone had found a better provider, given that there's 15,000 people in our community. Looks like I can't give up the landline yet for just cell phones.

I have had both Sprint and Verizon wireless service while living in Montclair and found the Verizon service to be much better. When I had Sprint, calls were usually dropped while driving on Waterway near Moncure Park. I also had very poor service from my home office. While I still have some problems with Verizon they do not number anywhere near what I had with Sprint.

We have Sprint now and we seem to get great signal strength here at home in upper Montclair. Both my husband and I generally have 3 or 4 bars, but usually 4. I've never lost a call anywhere within Montclair or the surrounding areas, including by Moncure Park. We've had Sprint since 2003.

So for us, it works fine.

(when we moved in to Montclair in 2000, we had Cingular and the only place we could even get a signal was from the top bunk of one of the upstairs bedrooms. And it wasn't enough to hold a call. So now, this is definitely better!)

I've been using Sprint for years (before that, Cingular - ugh.); I get strong signal/service everywhere. I've never had a problem. And now that Spring and Nextel have merged it's got a bigger area and supposedly a stronger signal. But as mentioned I've always had great service with Sprint.

I thought Cingular was supposed to be the best now that they've merged with AT&T? Anyone had a good experience since the merge?

I've had Verizon Wireless for about a year now. As long as we're outside, the reception appears to be ok; inside, we have none.

I can not wait until my cingular contract runs out. Then I can finally get a Good phone. Like verizon. I really hate it when you try to speed dial someone, then the cell says "FOR EMERGENCYS ONLY". You could get 2, maybe 3 bars if you stand on top of the lake montclair dam! :P

And have great coverage in Montclair until I'm at the main entrance by 7-11 then I am dropped. Otherwise, I am fine in the house and everywhere. I have been a montclair resident on/off for 20+ years.

I have had T-mobile, what used to be voicestream, since we moved to Montclair in 2001. My wife has a nokia and my phone is a nokia. We get incredible service. We live diagonally across from Dairy Queen. Never had any problems in the home. The spot that drops the call is about 1/4 of a mile from Cardinal Rd. We go no signal at all over in Ashland subdivision when we visit our friends, so I'm assuming we are in a spot with limited cell towers. I have verizon for a work cell phone. No problems down by the Food Lion Shopping center area near our home. I have neighbors that complained about AT&T service, but were happier when they switched to Verizon. Hope this helps with your selection of Cell phone service.

We used Sprint when we first moved to the Southlake area a couple years ago. Sprint was horrible...then at least. We had checked before arriving and heard Verizon was great, so we went with them and have been very happy with the service ever since. We've experienced no dead zones or static at all, ranging from the Pentagon to Quantico and F-Berg, and from Benton Middle to Forest Park HS. There HAVE been a few mysterious instances when our middle teen was visiting in the area around the 7-11 and we couldn't call her cell--she said the phone never rang--but the jury's still out on that problem!

I've had Sprint for about five years (before that, Cingular - ugh.) and Sprint is great. I have full clear service all over Montclair, indoors or out. Now that they've merged with Nextel I guess it will be even stronger - but all along there has never been anywhere I can't get a clear signal, except in the 4th level of my parking garage in DC (the only person in my 7-person car pool who can get service in the garage uses Verizon). I'm no longer on a contract but wouldn't consider switching. Sprint is terrific!
