It's typically one of our favorite events in Montclair, but this year we were traveling.

Maybe its time to revisit this cost to the Montclair membership…is it too expensive, are we getting our money worth, or return on the dollar. This year it was highly overcast with low gray clouds; so it wasn't as spectacular if it were a clear night. It’s the luck of the draw, and we drew a lousy night for our display.

Maybe, just maybe we can better use our dollars within the community. We not only provide a free show for our association but it’s also a free show for many outside folks. Lots of folks won’t like this viewpoint, but the cost should drive us to reconsider this event.

I brought this up last year - It is a waste IMHO. What are we paying for the 20 minutes of noise... 30k or more?

We couldn't make it this year, but this is a nice family & community event. I'd vote to keep it going.

Oh for pity's sake! A waste of money??!! The Montclair fireworks almost rival the display on the National Mall. How unAmerican can you be?

Just back the truck up a bit...

I have spent over 36 years of my life in service to this country, just because I don't find it fiscally proper for my money to be spent on fireworks sure as heck does not mean I am un-american.

Perhaps its the real "fireworks" that have been shot over my head in the past or perhaps it is just a waste of funds - you want fireworks go to the mall watch them there, better yet go to Irag or Afganistan you can get the real meaning of fireworks...

The fireworks are a waste of money... if you think of a return on investment idea. The fireworks alone are under a 3 year contract for 36,000.00 (back when I was on the events committee. I'm sure it has gone up since 2001 and I don't want to go look up the contract on armstrong connect, but i'm glad it is posted there) There are people that would agree that 12 minutes of fireworks is worth $12,000.00? I still take the family and we walk down to the golf course to watch them every year, but I believe the kids have more fun with the $75.00 of fireworks that I purchase and we let off in front of my house... not to mention the safer items that the kids get to do themselves. The 2008 year's firework display was pathetic in my opinion. The weather was not cooperating. The after-smoke covered a lot. The previous years presentation was better, but I would still like to cut out ALL community events where only 200 out of 15,000 people show up to participate. But you sure as heck won't see a proper poll/referendum from the board of directors about who would want to cut, if any, activities.. a simple line-up of all the ones that don't make enough funds to cover themselves with a simple Do you want the board to fund this activity? Yes NO. I only served 9 years in the military, but I guess I'm unAmerican since I totally believe the fireworks are a waste of home owner association funds. I don't believe there is one person that moved to this neighborhood just because there was an annual fireworks display. I really don't believe they would pay more money to live here just to watch a 12 minute display in July. We could do a lot more with that money in line with keeping the community safe and sprucing a 35 year old sub-division up to be attractive to potential buyers. Put that money in a fund so that Montclair with its 1.8 million dollar budget could get around to having a proper community clubhouse, community pool, or even a gym

Many years, this has been the only event that we attend. I vote we cut out anything else but the fireworks.

MPOA spends a lot of money on things most homeowners never see, which is probably why there are so many questions about how our money is spent. The fireworks is a very visible (but short) event and I think it should continue. Think of the show we could have if we took just 10% of the cost of our "security" service (sorry, I just had to add that - no, not a fan of MPOA security service)....we could about double the show!
